Top 5 most played J-Pop songs I've Heard in Japan


Hello! As you may know, I'm studying in Nagoya, Japan. It's a great experience, and despite the personal nature of my journal blog, I encourage you to read it!

Despite what you might think, Japan plays a lot of American music in public spaces. I've heard renditions of "And I will always love you," "Soul Sister," and of course "Baby" (Justin Beiber) over vairous loud speakers. But when the Japanese play their hits, they tend to favor a select few...


... So! I've been in Department stores, phone stores, dining halls, karaoke bars, and delicious restaurants. And I can say with great pride that I've discovered some of the most widely played musical tracks in Japan's public spaces. Of course these are simply the most recent songs, but they're quite catchy and I wanna share them with you!

Note: They are in the order of most frequently played (from my experience this past week). They are not in accordance with the Oricon charts.

Anime Expo Expectations and Site Upgrades


Hey guys it's been a while hasn't it? It's almost like you're meeting your long lost high school buddy for a fun and relaxing game of basketball. Yes, this is a Kuroko's Basketball reference. Yes I've seen the anime. What do you mean, that's the wrong Kuroko? I know for certain that that is the RIGHT Kuroko. ... Okay nothing gets past you guys.

The highly-acclaimed Otaku Reviewers Convention Diaries page has seen an overhaul (hopefully for the better) and we finally updated the "monthly look" that features an old post. Our tracks today deal with relationships, fragility, hurt feelings, and whatever else you'd encounter in a teen drama! Vocaloids aren't teenagers, you say?! They may not be your average teens, but they were definitely programmed to be (based on their ages).

Hey everyone! Usually this is RPGHero's department but I felt compelled to make this! >:)

I hope everyone's had a wonderful Fourth of July! Remember--July 7th is Tanabata so don't forget to learn the song and sing it when the time comes! ^^

Alright, so let's move onto the post! :D

First we have two very interesting AMVs that I really liked:

Next we have this Otaku Breakdancing video!  The whole story is pretty funny--see for yourself!



Next we have Tarako Tarako Tarako by Kigurumi! This song was released in June 2006 for "Q.P. Corporation's (Kabushikigaishu) spaghetti sauce" (source). This song has set a record for making it to the Top 100 Singles on the Oricon charts with such young performers! (source).



And now to break the record of the youngest performers on the Oricon charts come Kaoru and Tomoki. Together, in a viral song called "Maru Maru Mori Mori" which is the ending song to the very popular Japanese Drama (and by "very" I mean VERY--20% of the Japanese population is said to know it!!!) "Marumo no Okite", they have pushed up to #6 on the Oricon Charts!!!

Look at this quote from Wikipedia: 

"This singles album debuted on the Oricon charts at the 3rd position with sales of around 35 thousand albums a week. This makes the group Kaoru to Tomoki, Tamani Mook ( 薫と友樹、たまにムック Kaoru to Tomoki, tama ni mukku?) the youngest group ever to debut in the TOP10 charts at the average of 6 years old, beating the previous record set by the group Kigurumi ( キグルミ?) for their singles Tarako・Tarako・Tarako ( たらこ・たらこ・たらこ?) in September 2006."

And last but not least is the hilarious Mameshiba series!  It reminds me of Fireball (MAL) and they are totally worth watching!  There's 20 of them, so watch them all! >:).

[Wish I could just sit back and enjoy the Cherry Blossoms like Miku's doing!!]


Hey guys, hope you're enjoying the weather as it begins to warm up! If I were living in Japan, I'd love to see the sakura blossom... instead I can enjoy great Vocaloid music I guess!

Today's theme: complexity!

"Night before the Sakura" can be summed up in one word: beautiful. Well, maybe also "catharsis." The video is truly a minimalist work, but the song is so powerful and touching... if you feel nothing after seeing this, you're obviously a horrible person! Believe it!

"What do you mean!?" is slightly different, yet strangely similar. It's a complex jumble of human experience typecasted, iconified and shaken, not stirred. Miku is as cute as always, portraying our frenzied mortal balance between Human, Joy, Logic, Cold World, and of course You =]. But someone please explain to me what the sheep is!!

Vocaloid track of the Whenever I Feel Like It {S2} 5



[Ren and Rin are the stars this Valentine's Day!]

Hey guys, welcome to the fifth Vocaloid of the second season! I know you guys are very excited for Valentine's day *tomorrow*, so I took that into consideration when I chose the songs! Today's theme: love!

In Japanese, "to like" is "suki" and to REALLY like is "daisuki". That's where the first song gets it's name. Telling someone you like them is probably one of the hardest things to say! The first video really makes me want to cheer for Rin!

But also, the Japanese word for "dislike" is "kirai." So wait, the second song is Ren's rejection!? No! Suki Kirai is about mixed feelings, in a very light-hearted way. Is this how Rin's confession turns out...? (Well, actually Ren confesses in this one...)

Anyway I hope you enjoy the videos! Between Rin's confession and the two's relationship, which one do you prefer?

Hello, welcome back Vocaloid enthusiasts! It’s sure been a long time since we’ve done this, huh? I’m sure you’ve all missed the greatness of Vocaloid gracing Otaku Reviewers!

Anyway, seeing as this season is “PV SHOWDOWN,” I’ve brought a couple of songs, both by Hatsune Miku, that are undeniable “classics”! Vocaloid Track of the Whenever I Feel Like It {S2} 1

Hello Vocaloid enthusiasts! Welcome to the second revisiting of Vocaloid music videos, Vocaloid Track of the Whenever I Feel Like It, Season 2! This time around, I'm setting up this series a little differently. That's right folks, there's some substance and structure this time!

The concept...

PV SHOWDOWN!


Every time I feel like it, I'll take two vocaloid songs and have them stand to compare themselves. Great times surely await, as we hear the electric angels of Vocaloid sing with "inhuman" passion.

So for the first section, we'll be comparing a couple Miku songs that compete eachother in terms of age. The first one is a classic song, one of the first 3DPVs and probably one of the most influential songs to Vocaloid's success: Anger!

With it's futuristic feel, it's a great video for those who are being introduced to Vocaloid for the first time. The video itself is about Miku's desire to sing. The lyrics themselves, like most vocaloid songs, are very deep and can be interpreted many ways. It sounds like an amazing song that could be a great opening song for an anime!

Hatsune Miku - Anger




The next song has been popular since it's release. This song is very stylish and it's lyrics don't make much sense taken literally, but when you look at the title, Chaining Intentions, they make a little more sense.

The PV for Chaining Intentions is a great representation of MMD and it's influence on Vocaloids. This PV was in the contest "MMD Cup 4" where people make great videos with Miku Miku Dance and showcase their talents! This colorful, brilliant, astract, and interesting PV shows how strongly the competitive spirit affects progress!

RPGHero's Random PowerUP!

Heya here's RPGHero with a new segment. I'm going to tell you all about a PowerUp I've encountered in anime, video games, pop culture, reality, etc. The key is that it's a PowerUP and can either increase someone's power or change them into something more badass!

Today's random PowerUP is the "Ju Nen Bazooka" or translated to "The Ten Year Bazooka"


The ten year bazooka is an item carried by this little guy


His name is Lambo and he is from the anime "Katekyoushi Hitman Reborn" or "Hitman Home Tutor Reborn".

The ten year bazooka is a item that was created by Lambo's mafia famiglia, the Bovino family. Anyone can fit inside the bazooka and once inisde the bazooka it transports that person ten years into the future. The intriguing thing about this item is that it covers a serious aspect of time travel, what entity replaces the time traveler in the present time. Well when the present self is transported ten years into the future the future self from that time is brought to the past. One interesting aspect is that once the bazooka is used the future self is transported doing whatever they were doing in the future.

(SPOILER ALERT)
This item is useful in the "Reborn" world because it's a world of fighting and dueling. Lambo, though he's five, is chosen to be a guardian of the Vongolia famiglia. His first serious use of the item was to bring his future self back to the present in order to fight against the adult he must duel to claim the role of guardian. So once he was summoned at 15
 
he wasn't strong enough and ran back into the bazooka to be summoned at the age of 25.

And by then he was definitely tough enough to beat that guy but one important thing about the ten year bazooka is that the time travel can only be sustained for five minutes.

He had to fight this guy who's an assasin

And I'll go on a tangeant to say that he is black.
Why can't they be the good guys??
Enough of that tangeant... You might be watching something new but like this one day with black main characters.. just a hint from ya informer RPGHero (it's still in the developing stages though).

I guess if I was one year older than Lambo and had a Ju Nen Bazooka I'd be mad set. Because I was tough at 16 and I'm banking on 26 to be a stronger year... And I'll keep my mod's to one sentence at the end of these posts. You're welcome!

"Is there happiness here? As if being in a dream, I'm aimlessly eager for the one scenery you sought."


The abstraction of today's Vocaloid song makes understanding it very difficult. It's one of those songs that has an individual meaning for whoever hears it. But sasakure.UK (composer) does an excellent job making the arrangement equally complex and enjoyable. Seriously, why don't these guys get paid the big bucks?

Japanese legend is rife with "things that bring happiness." Heck, add "shiawase no" before anything and it's the [blank] that brings happiness. "Fleetingly Eternal Burning Bird" is [partly] about the "shiawase no tori," or the bird that brings happiness to the one who catches it. But would a bird of happiness really be happy to be locked up in a cage? This contradiction proves that there really is no "bird of happiness"... In a broader sense, this song questions the search for happiness.

Depressing? Heck no. At least you get to enjoy an equally intriguingly dark and sophisticated 3DPV. A very interesting portrayal of an entire world made of crystals. If you're not into all that stuff then try to discern Miku's voice from Luka's. It's harder than you think, this song features "Hatsune Miku Append," a new version of Vocaloid that provides 6 archtypal voices for Miku, one of which is called "Dark." Strangely enough, it sounds almost exactly like Luka.

Welcome back to more Vocaloid awesomeness. Today's PV is one of the most well done 3DPVs I've ever seen. "Romeo and Cinderella" [Yes, NOT Juliet] is, most simply put, about the hardships a young woman faces in an intimate relationship. But after watching the video for this song, many powerful motifs come into play. See if you can catch all the symbolism in this one!

I apologize if this stretches the limit for our mostly family-friendly blog, but the beauty of this song with the video out-prioritizes that. I hope you enjoy!

The Otaku Reviewers



This blog, "The Otaku Reviewers", was started in February of 2010 on this very same platform, Blogger. At first, it was a venture into the informational and informal world of comics, anime, video games, and Japanese culture. In other words, just a random blog.

Over time, the founder of the blog credited with the pseudonym "RPGhero" was joined by two fellow bloggers and friends with the names "Chansu" and "Deretsun". Together the three bloggers looked up interesting Japanese culture facts, recommended new anime, talked about their own "otaku" interests, and traveled across the United States to various anime conventions.

There have been off periods when the blog ceased production of content and there have been times when there would be dozens of blog posts per week. The schedule varies depending on the lives of the people behind the alias'. However the pattern is that we always get back into the game with even newer information about Japanese culture, anime, video games, and other nerdy hobbies.

The motto of our blog is:
"A cure for your apathy and an inspiration for your dreams. ...Applies to Otaku, anime fans, J-pop junkies, and the like"

The purpose is to blog about cool stuff related solely to anime and otaku stuff. There's no other reason we're doing this.
