One Piece vs. One Punch Man --- Review!

While One Piece is considered to be a part of “The Big Three” anime, One Punch Man also does not lag behind and could be considered a part of the “Big Three” shonen anime that recently came out. Both One Piece and One Punch Man are considered the best shonen anime of all time. Filled with breathtaking action, phenomenal storyline and a large number of characters, both these anime are loved by anime fans all around the world. Let’s talk in detail about both of them now!

One Piece --- The Story

Gol D. Roger was considered the strongest pirate who had sailed the Grand Line. However, he was captured and executed by the World Government. Before getting executed, he told the world about his hidden treasure, One Piece. All the pirates started looking for One Piece and wanted it all for themselves.

Monkey D. Luffy was one such pirate who was looking for One Piece. However, he had no comrades, not even a ship. He was able to befriend a number of strange people, adding them to his “Nakama”. Now, Luffy and his Nakama must travel towards the Grand Line in order to get their hands on the legendary treasure, One Piece.

One Punch Man --- The Story

The story of One Punch Man revolves around Saitama who is a boring man. All Saitama wanted since his childhood was to become a superhero. To realize his dream, Saitama trained hard day and night. His training paid off and he became extremely powerful. He was able to defeat huge and powerful monsters with only a punch.

As time passes by, Saitma gets bored of having weak monsters as his opponents and wanted some thrill in his life. Genos, a 19-year-old Cyborg who had been observing Saitama told him that he would like to be his disciple. He also registers Saitama and himself as a hero so that they could be recognized. Will Saitama ever be able to fight any opponent that is stronger than him?

One Piece and One Punch Man

How are they like each other?

Both One Piece and One Punch Man are action-packed with a huge number of very unique characters with different powers. The action scenes for both the anime are just jaw dropping. Both Luffy and Saitama are extremely powerful and can take any enemy down. The background music and Osts for both of them are also quite enthralling. They make us feel things and create a certain hype as well.

Is this the end of our anime duel?

While One Punch Man’s animation is better than One Piece’s animation, the cast of One Piece definitely beats One Punch Man’s. Initially, One Piece’s animation was not that good. That’s because it came out in the 90s. It’s animation is extremely good now. On the other hand, One Punch Man’s animation has always been good. It’s really hard to compare the two because both of them are on par with each other. However, One Piece’s fan base is definitely greater. They might disagree with this!

LGBTQ Characters in Anime

If there's any kind of media that's tolerant of all kinds of peoples, it's probably anime. Popular media in general is welcoming and making new roles for LGBTQ characters. However, popular media kind of only sees LGBTQ people as kind of sexual (or sex-u-al), as if they don't have their own unique personality traits and quirks that make them cool characters in their own right. Anime, takes LGBTQ characters to the next level and gives them cool anime traits that make them kind of awesome, anime awesome...

Tiger and Bunny's Fire Emblem

The epitome of lean, refined muscle and an inferno of firepower. The perfect shounen hero, except that he would rather choose between Tiger or Bunny than any of the other characters in the show. At first, he seems very flamboyant almost like the poster child for the gay Afro-character but as the show goes on he becomes a true hero. That's because in addition to being on a show for heroes he is actually fearless, cares for, and protects the weak. Check out a cool AMV with Fire Emblem right below, it's from our own studio and youtube channel.

MM!'s Mio Isurugi

Mio comes off as a girly girl and she is. But psychologically, Mio is a dom and can never actually be a girly girl. She'd rather have a stereotypically male role than a female role, which makes her different, sort of like she can walk both sides of the street. Through the show, she unlocks her peer's inner hentai or variation from the norms of attraction. Just by being around her, one guy came out of the closet and the other main character, the male lead Taro Sado, was able to express his own masochistic desires to the max. Making Mio Isurugi and the Taro a compatible match, but not the straightforward average heterosexual pair.

One Piece's Emporio Ivankov

The Okama Kingdom in One Piece, is a social community of LGBTQ located in one of the lower levels of Impel Down, the most deadly prison in One Piece. Impel Down is famous of destroying the hopes and dreams of the toughest pirates and criminals. It has levels dedicated to subzero temperatures and some levels dedicated to arctic temperatures, others to bloodthirsty monsters. However, the Okama Kingdom, headed by Imperio Ivankov (pictured above) is a flourishing social community with all the amenities of home, in a hidden corner of the expansive prison. The only price to be there is that Ivankov will change your body to the gender you're not comfortable with or take ten years off your life span with his injection power. Ivankov himself or herself, can change genders at will.

Jaguar's Dream

Everyone has a dream, a vision, a message, a hope......

Something that they would tell you if the world was ending.....

To make things right again.....

To make the world a better place....

This article is an homage to...

Jaguar D. Saul

 Img Credit: four-emperors.tumblr.com
One Piece is a story of pirates, powers, training, and the danger of the open sea! For every honorable warrior of the sea, there are tens, even hundreds of bad fights that brave the seas of this anime. The main character of One Piece is Monkey D. Luffy, who starts off as a 17 year old who ventures out to the open sea to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors but most notably the pirate Red Hair Shanks who gave up his arm to save Luffy from a shark when Luffy was about 7 years old.

Later in the story there is Nico Robin at the age of about 8, who, long story short (to avoid unnecessary spoilers just in case you want to watch the arc yourself), lived on an island of smart people who knew too much about the One Piece world and drew the attention of the World Government who wanted to cover a secret that could spell disaster if it fell into the hands of the wrong person. In the end, Robin was a wanted criminal for running away from the world government marines that were hunting down her family and friends for their secrets and treasure (which happened to be books containing valuable knowledge).

I don't want to go into all of the details because I want you the reader, to experience the story by watching the anime. However in summary Jaguar D. Saul was a marine captain who was seeking a safe place to hide on the same island as Robin's homeland. He made friends with Robin who was missing her mother who was always traveling the Grand Line. Jaguar taught Robin how to laugh and have fun. In the end, Jaguar gave his life to help Robin escape from persecution and danger.

Jaguar was always looking at the brighter side of life, though being a giant. He was a little bit smaller than the other giants of One Piece however. He found his own happiness in friendship. Maybe Jaguar felt alone since he was without his Nakama, or treasured friends and comrades.

Jaguar also had the Will of D. which in One Piece was a symbol of pirate conviction that pirates were given when they were born with the letter D. as their middle name. Jaguar's will was for Robin to be happy and it meant more to him than the Grand Line and his life as a soldier.

Some of Jaguar's signature quotes are:

"When times are hard, just laugh!"

"Laughter is the way to happiness"

"There is nothing more ridiculousthan being born in this world to live alone..Someday you will meet brave friends who will protect you.Go and Live with them Robin"

I too believe that no person is born into this world to be alone! If you're reading this and you're hopeful like me, go out and make a friend or let your friends how much you care for them. Be like Jaguar D. Saul today and remember it takes all kinds of characters  and people plus their friends to make this world! I will end this post with a haiku for all the dreamers out there!

A Few Things About What it Means to Be an Otaku

Otaku, a term that originated in Japan. At first the term was used to refer to someone who had an abnormally high obsession with anime, manga, Japanese idol stars, or jpop. The term has been through it's share of controversy, just like any other controversial term for people. Now otaku is a great thing to be, especially if you're into Japanese the great arts like anime and manga. Also, there are some things that set otaku apart from normal fandom and even normal people.

I'd like to talk about these things, in light of NYAF's last year at comiccon and also because I feel they are important for readers of our blog.

I've realized a few things about what it means to be an Otaku or someone who is very passionate about anime or manga.

1. Otaku don't follow conventional rules. If you're looking for otaku to be happy with the rules of society, keep looking. Many otaku won't vote this year, because both candidates are boring among other reasons. Many otaku work regular jobs but it doesn't really matter, because we know that the best part of the day revolves around anime or J-music. We don't follow rules for the sake of the system but for the sake of ourselves and the anime we love so much!

2. Otaku can't be depended upon to fit stereotypes. Oftentimes you'll find otaku guys dressed as anime girls or girls dressed as guys. We'll watch anime about masochists who just seem to fit in with sadists, lolicons, and gays (Such as the anime MM!). We watch anime that makes light of racism and classism by punching a one-percenter in the face (Such as the anime One Piece). We can't be depended upon to satisfy society's will because like an anime character would say, "Break through it!".

3. Otaku and American comics don't mix. NY Comiccon had merged with NY Anime Festival a few years back. Now they're getting rid of NYAF! You can't merge with anime and throw it away! You can't throw away otaku! If there's anything of note, it's that another anime convention will take it's place or NY will forever be at a loss toward Otaku. Sure superman is great but all otaku know Goku would kick his butt!

Enjoy! ~

Goku and Luffy: Two Peas in a Pod

Goku and Luffy are very similar, not in appearance... but in mind and soul.

Whenever people try to figure out their personality they think they're both either ESFP or ENFP, remember my last post?

That's interesting. The only unsure part is the Sensate or Intuition of these characters. Do they rush into extremely dangerous situations hoping to get through on Intuition alone or by taking everything one move/fight at a time (for Sensate types)?

Personally I'd like to rely on my intution, I don't care about taking everything one move or step at a time. I'd rather know everything will either be A OK or know it's not. That framing also helps us think about why people don't know what Goky or Luffy's certain personality type is. Both characters obviously see alot of pain and take alot of pain, so it's difficult to tell.

Well one thing's certain, Eiichiro Oda (One Piece creator) was and is close to Akira Toriyama (Dragonball creator) and he even told Toriyama that he based Luffy off of Goku's resiliance.

Youtube Increases Anime DVD sales! Pirating decreases...

A study by a Japanese economics professor found that viewing Youtube videos of a anime increases the sales of that anime in stores. There is a link between views of that favorite opening and the sales of that anime. Just look at One Piece. One Piece videos frequently get close to or reach over a million views and the sales are equally high.

1,391,437 views of the current One Piece opening on youtube. That beats alot of your favorite viral videos by the way.

But he also found that file sharing and file downloading decreases the sales of anime DVDs in stores. And there is a negative link between pirating anime and sales. Also many people pirate One Piece, so the makers of ONE PIECE could be making much more.

Big News!!! From the past...

If you're a ONE PIECE fan and you're wondering, what is Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece like? Then look no further!

Check out his interview answers in SBS by God Len
Click here for Eiichiro Oda's Interview

Here's some examples of his unique answers to questions: (Oda's Answers are after the letter O)

D: Okay, there's something I need to ask you about, Odacchi. I was reading WANTED! (Odacchi's one-shot collection) today, and I was wondering, doesn't it seem like a bunch of your characters pick their noses a lot? (P.N. Pleasure)

O: Yeah, they do. Pick, pick, picky. So you wonder why... well, doesn't everyone pick their nose? The other mangakas just have their cameras pointed away when it happens. If you don't pick your nose... your boogers would collect up!! Oh dear... another dirty topic. Printing this kind of stuff makes all the female readers cringe. It'll happen again. But the guys laugh their asses off! Right?! Okay, next.

D: Why does Sanji-san's eyebrow curl up at the end? Please give a real answer!! (Note: This letter is written so that the last word is actually "dork", but it looks like it is still "please".)

O: Hey!! You, sit right there!! Now listen!! Everyone lives in circles!! The sun, the moon, and the earth all spin around!! And!! If the earth suddenly stopped spinning!! It would be a disaster, tidal waves everywhere!! Now remember that Sanji's eyebrow channels that circular energy!! Reflect upon this!! You may go!!

RPGHero: Hey that might be the real reason ONE PIECE is so GREAT! Hahahaha ^^

Rant by RPGHero

It's been a while guys! I haven't ranted in a long time about nothing in particular... So it's time.

It's been snowing for way too long in New York. I'm waiting patiently for Spring and more importantly the Sakura blossoms of Spring. Better known as Sakura Biyori/Sakura Weather.

But this is where I want to go:
Isn't it beautiful, It's Sakura Park in NYC. It's on the west side of Manhattan.

But imagine what that place must look like now man... Like three feet of snow, I hope that little building doesn't break, I'd like to see the Sakura trees from inside it haha.

I've been having alot of fun shoveling, since I quit my trucker job I'm having all the physical activity I miss. So that's my day basically. I get up watch some anime, go outside and shovel, then go to class. And don't forget coming home and watching something like MM!
Yes! I watch MM! Deretsun.

You think I was some shounen loving otaku pretending to be a hero? Well that's correct. But I love watching Sado get beat by his sadistic classmate, and since he's a "hardcore masochist" he's in love but he also likes his crush... I want this guy to choose someone haha. He better not just walk away without confessing his love to one of them...

But yeah that's my day. This rant... isn't like the others you say??
Well see for yourself... Here's an archive or RPGHero's epic rants they're much longer actually...

And look we're well past 300 posts, you thought you weren't going to get another... Well until 400, Stay cool and keep going in your Hokage dream or your Pirate King dream. Whichever you like.

Then there's Ichigo, just trying to survive against powerful wierdos. Doesn't even have a dream haha. I had to make fun of Bleach at least once.

The One Piece: Master Shounen Formula

I don't know if this is a new post series for The Otaku Reviewers (since we're always loving One Piece, publicly and privately), but I'm going to talk about what makes One Piece a shounen masterpiece. It hasn't been around for as long as the Dragonball (DragonballZ, Dragonball GT and Dragonball) series but it's fast catching up to them, in both selling and fan popularity. It frequently makes the top five in anime TV ratings in Japan.

It's only a matter of time before the much better Funimation version is broadcast on one of the three main young people networks (Disney, Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network).

So what is one thing that makes One Piece so great?

Ultrasacrifice (Compassion)

It hasn't happened once, it hasn't happened twice, it hasn't happened three times. No it's happened plenty of times. As a one piece fan you're expecting the next time someone on the good side sacrifices something for their nakama...

Ultrasacrifice is crap by itself. Make a shounen story and put tons of ultrasacrifice in it then watch people call your story fatalistic or negative or just stupid. Only a genius like Eiichiro Oda can weave it in so that it flows flawlessly, evokes smiles, fluttering heartbeats, and tears. And the feeling of being loved :)

In One Piece ultrasacrifice is balanced by the other things... Including but not limited to; kicking ass and taking names, extreme friendship, MMMsupar!, and other things. Ultrasacrifice by itself is kinda dumb. But also part of Shank's story, he barely knew Luffy. Luffy was just some kid that bothered his crew with his ranting but he still sacrificed his arm to save him from a bloodthirsty eel/shark. Especially since he liked Luffy's heart/courage, no other reason was required.. Oh and I forgot the keyword... The keyword is Compassion, that should be the real reason in fact I'm gonna change it now.

Funny Clip From One Piece!

Zorro says "Damn it" to Robin in the most effeminate way...

And the animaters of One Piece are genius', just look at the expression of softness in Robins face before she leaves... Animation's sure changed since Bugs Bunny, and some ways the same.........

Otaku Helping Others! Part Eight!

Today's "Otaku Helping Others" post is about:
Friendly Fighting!!!

I've noticed in anime and manga something that seems alittle bit wierd to me.

"Oh they get along well enough to fight", That's what you usually hear when two main characters and allies get into arguments and fights over who's better or cooler.

You might have wondered that yourself as an anime fan....

What does this mean?

I'll explain through my expert knowledge:
When two main characters usually guys fight and argue, though they're fighting pretty hard they're not fighting for any reason or goal. They might say they want to see who's stronger but they don't want to prove anything in the end. They just enjoy each other's company enough to express it in fighting.

This is different from a rival!!
Two rivals fight because the sole purpose is best each other. That is the ONLY purpose of a rivalry.

Sasuke and Naruto became rivals but their relationship has become different from a rival, in appearances.

What is different from a rival?

An evil fluffer-sucker who just wants to advance some evil goal or evil desire. Keyword: Evil

Well that's a spoiler but here...

Evil fluffer-sucker -------------------------------->

Krillin is one tough man to fight Frieza.
Frieza is evil... That's where Goku comes in and becomes Super Saiyan, blonde hair, high power... But that's not the goal of this post.

Back to my spiel... When two friends fight for no reason or just argue with each other, they have no real goal in it. They're just passing time...

It's harder in real life to tell this and easy at the same time.
If your friends lightheartedly joke with you (about you) or you might have random fights that's not so bad as long as it doesn't progress to RIVALRY or EVIL FLUFFER-SUCKER.

So enjoy the lighthearted jokes and random punches with friends... As long as your returning them!
And not all friends have to fight, if you're properly watching....

RPGHero's Top Ten Shounen Anime Openings

RPGHero ranks Shounen Anime Openings by a few criteria. Actually the only cred this has is the ranking.
1) How many battles involving main characters and powerful enemies are in the opening? The more of these the higher the rank.
2) Does the opening have to do with the arc that the story is in currently? Closer to what's going on in the show is higher.
3) Do the scenes and the music mesh together so what you are watching/hearing seem like one distinct entity? I.E. you will think that the music was made for the anime and the anime scenes made for the music.
4) Does the opening include main bosses? More main bosses the higher the rank.
5) Do the lyrics correspond to the arc? Closer to the story = higher rank.
6) Does the main character or supporting main characters use high level attacks? I.E. the cooler the attacks shown the higher the rank.
7) Overall Epicness. Enough said.

10. Yu Yu Hakusho Opening (Full)

9. Dokan Dokan Paradise - Dragonball Kai

8. Jap - Sengoku Basara

7. Detarame na Zanzou - Blassreiter

6. D-technolife - Bleach

5. Paper Moon - Soul Eater

4.  Tie!
Listen to the Stereo - Katekyoshi Hitman Reborn and Gekidou - D. Gray.man

3.Hakanaku mo Towa no Kanashi - Gundam 00

2. Tie!
Kokoro No Chizu - One Piece and Golden Time Lover - Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

1. THE WINNER!
Sign - Naruto Shippuuden

THE MOST EPIC!!!
Naruto isn't even the main focus of this opening (Spoilers ahead). Sasuke and Naruto's mentor Jiraiya are the only characters with fights. Sasuke's being the main reason he wanted to be a ninja, to get revenge. Closes a whole climax for the show. Naruto is shown losing control to the beast within him and then gaining control at the end, after his mentor had *gulp* passed, as he cries a single tear. Definitely one of the most epic openings in all of shounen anime. *Did I mention that Jiraiya's toad summon swings and rips part of Pain's summon Cerebus' head right off??

Otaku Helping Others! Part 5

Hey all! RPGHero here!
I usually don't make an "Otaku Helping Others!" post until after about a week has passed since the old one. But I had an idea for a new one that I have not written down in my planning.

Today's post is about!
The Aftermath of Being a Loser, Becoming a Winner!

What do I mean you say??

We've all felt it in our lives, that feeling that we're not good enough, that we can't do anything worthwhile, that we're losers. And sometimes before or after that, other people will call us losers and make fun of us... u.u

So what do we do after getting that feeling?

Many of us just want to give up, and we feel hopeless...

But don't give up! If you don't lose your courage and heart, you can become a winner!

In "Naruto", the main character for which the show is named is an outcast. All of his thirteen or fourteen year old life he's been made fun of, ostracized, and put down by basically everyone in his village. Turned out as a baby the village used his body to seal the horrible monster that ravaged their village and killed many (spoiler free). All his life he was singled out as a born loser because of that. But to Naruto, it seemed like he was just a loser. He didn't know why... He spent many days alone and lonely.

Well, all I can say is that Naruto worked hard non-stop for years. Naruto didn't back down from any challenge. People continued to reject him until he started to prove that he was important. Now in the new Shippuuden series, everyone remarks about how wrong they were and how screwed they'd be if it weren't for Naruto. Tried to keep it spoiler free.

My next point is gonna be told with an AMV...
This was made by Youtube channel "Newg4teforever".

In those clips from the show, "One Piece", a pirate named Bellamy told Luffy that being a pirate for the reason of searching for dreams and legends is bullshit. Luffy allowed himself to get beat up by the man because he wasn't going to fight a fight against someone who doesn't believe in his way of life. Soon after Bellamy and his crew hurt one of Luffy's friends and that's when he cut loose on those fools... I think the AMV tells it pretty well. The point is DON'T LET PEOPLE TELL YOU WHAT YOU ARE LIVING FOR, WHAT YOU ARE STRUGGLING FOR. Because that is up to you. I'd be like Luffy and not even fight those types of people, they are not worth your time.

There are many examples of this in anime but I think I've shed some light already.

This is for everyone who might be bullied, or hated on, put down, or ostracized. Don't give up because of what other people say. If you follow your dreams, you will be a winner no matter what!!!

And watch One Piece and Naruto for inspiration! Like us!

Otaku Helping Others! Part 4

Today's "Otaku Helping Others!" post is about...

~Making Friends~
Aizen and friends ^^

Ooops

Tomoya and his true friends ^^

Its easy to make friends, in fact it's  so easy it's hard!

It's not easy in shounen anime,  you know how they say the best romances start off as friends?? Well in shounen the best friendships start off as rivals! That want to kill each other!

When Piccolo and Goku first met Piccolo wanted to rule the world and put humans in slavery. Goku wanted to beat Piccolo and eat a couple dozen turkeys (since Goku is addicted to food). The two later became friends and Goku's son Gohan even thinks of him as an uncle. Especially since Piccolo sacrificed his life for Goku's son later on.

Ichigo and Renji had a similar story. Ichigo wanted to save Rukia from execution but Renji wanted Ichigo to stay out of thier business. After Ichigo kicked his butt the two later became good friends especially because Ichigo saved Rukia who Renji likes. Renji forever remains weak though.

Is it me or does it seem like the more negative rival becomes the weaker person later on...
Well that's cool but friendship is cooler!

Ooops that one got mixed in with the rest... Some rivals never become friends but remain rivals for an entire series... *Cough* Naruto *Cough*

What about making new friends you say?

Well even introverts can make friends! Take hope my e-friend!
And introverted guys usually meet a girl that wants to be their friend...
Kyon sat in front of Haruhi at school. She later recruited him to be part of her supernatural/alien awareness club. He was dragged into the situation and made new friends... With an esper, alien, and a time traveler... who joined the club posing as regular students. Kyon later found that Haruhi can change the universe. Lucky!!!

Tomoya met Nagisa walking to school. He is an introverts introvert. He comes with dad problems, poor school attendance, and a lackluster or should I say first-class lack of motivation. He meets a girl who asks him to walk her up the hill to school and the two become best friends and then lovers!

Take heart even if you're not an introvert or fated to meet that special girl. You can still make friends. Let's look at the formula for a lasting friendship!

1. Have common interests!
In Yakitate Japan, Azuma found friends in his co-workers who all share a love of making delicious bread!

2. Have similar goals!
Luffy's crew are all friends who all want to find One Piece and live the pirate life! However the admirals and marines don't like pirates and they're strong... Along with ruthless pirates...

3. Need each others support!
In Tsubasa Chronicles, the band of friends stick together because without each other they may not find their way back to their own dimension. They become friends through their struggle to get to their home dimensions.

\4. Having someone to rag on!
Jet always listens to Spike's problems. And likes to rag on him from time to time...

5. Possibility of going out!
I think that's the only reason Risa and Otani stayed friends... Even though they argued alot and had height issues.

6. RED STRING OF FATE?
Chansu and I almost discussed this at length... Does there exist a RED STRING of fate that ties two people together?? Well I really don't know... But I would think that it would make for a lasting friendship. and I don't know this anime...

Hey! If all else fails don't give up! RPGHero is friendless except for a few good people, even if they are just Chansu and Deretsun...

Welcome to
The Otaku Reviewers

This blog, "The Otaku Reviewers", was started in February of 2010 on this very same platform, Blogger. At first, it was a venture into the informational and informal world of comics, anime, video games, and Japanese culture. In other words, just a random blog.

Over time, the founder of the blog credited with the pseudonym "RPGhero" was joined by two fellow bloggers and friends with the names "Chansu" and "Deretsun". Together the three bloggers looked up interesting Japanese culture facts, recommended new anime, talked about their own "otaku" interests, and traveled across the United States to various anime conventions.

There have been off periods when the blog ceased production of content and there have been times when there would be dozens of blog posts per week. The schedule varies depending on the lives of the people behind the alias'. However the pattern is that we always get back into the game with even newer information about Japanese culture, anime, video games, and other nerdy hobbies.

The motto of our blog is:
"A cure for your apathy and an inspiration for your dreams. ...Applies to Otaku, anime fans, J-pop junkies, and the like"

The purpose is to blog about cool stuff related solely to anime and otaku stuff. There's no other reason we're doing this.

If you like our blog, please support us in however small a way that you would like. We appreciate our readers!

Check it out on Amazon!
