Restaurant Review : Shoyu Sushi
While I was back home in California, I went to a new Japanese restaurant called Shoyu Sushi that was opening up around the corner from where I used to live. They hadn't had their Grand Opening yet, but I thought it'd be good to try out since it was close and has 5-star reviews on Yelp.
Upon walking in, we were greeted with a loud "Irrashaimase!" (common greeting at Japanese shops and restaurants) and then seated. It was actually a bit dark inside, but relaxing. While we waited for the rest of our group to arrive, we ordered drinks. While we waited, the owner came by to talk with us. As it turned out, she was from Hawaii. When she found out my cousin was also from there, she gave us a round of grapefruit Soju on the house. It was good, though I didn't drink my whole cup since I'm not very big on alcohol. ^^;
Fast forward to the food...I ordered Katsu Dinner. I think everyone else ordered bento with different options. I don't remember what they all had, but everything was delicious. We were all pretty hungry, so we didn't really get pictures of our meals. Oops again! ^^;;

Horror Movies from Japan - Part 1
It's Halloween season, so that means horror movies! Or, in this case, Japanese horror movies! This week, I watched Keitai Kareshi and POV: A Cursed Film.
Keitai Kareshi (Mobile Boyfriend) is about an app where girls can make their ideal boyfriend and exchange texts with him. The game is over when you reach 0% or 100% on the Love Meter. Doesn't sound so bad, right? What makes it scary is that if it's game over, the player dies.
You can have your boyfriend taken by other girls if your love meter is too low which is pretty awesome as that could save your life.
Another thing that makes it scary is the faces of the boyfriends. The're so creepy, I was pretty close to giving up on watching this. Trust me, they're more creepy than the opening music.
Level of Japanese in this movie is beginner-intermediate, so it's easy to understand without the subtitles. If you want to see blood, there's not much of that in this movie. It may also put people off otome games or cause people to play them more depending on the person. CG in this is pretty bad, so some parts are more funny than scary. I'd say more, but I don't want to give away any of the good parts. ^x^
The second movie is called POV: A Cursed Film which is a bit like home video footage that's being recorded by the crew of the web show that the main characters are on.
One of the girls is being haunted by the spirits of her old junior high, so they go there to try to get rid of them with the help of a psychic. Things are pretty much normal until dark when crazy things start to happen. If ghost hunting is your thing, I'd say give this movie a shot.
There's disclaimers at the beginning to scare viewers, but that's how most movies like this start out. Again, no blood in this movie. Subtitles are necessary, though they're not very good...the person who added them thought they would use numbers to replace letters and question marks, sometimes making the subs more scary than the ghosts.
Anyway, if you like these types of movies, it's pretty good. It does start out slow at first, but got chills later in the story. I think it would be scary to watch it in the dark, which is NOT what I did. Sorry, I'm a scaredy-cat. ^^;;

Materials and their meanings
Wood - Usually the first tool of the game. Types of games use wood at first to compare with the advanced material tools that the higher level knights and warriors use. Kind of as if we all started off with a stick or a bokken.
Bronze/Iron - Common tools use these elements and alloy. They won't fare against a strong bad guy or the final boss.
Silver/myrithril - That's what's in treasure chest no. 8888. The myrithril in pleated sheets that almost always has to be brought to the next town, so a new tool can be forged. They're usually found in the deepest forest or a dead end of a dungeon. Always call a party member before setting out to find myrithril, it is a difficult impossible journey.
Mystery Accessories - Same as myrithril but these can be equipped like charms, in good fashion. Think about it, fashion can also be charming and beat the bosses? Well in the alluring world of the RPG... maybe your world in .addition.

2nd Prime Time: Hero --> ULtd.

H e r o U n - l i m i t e d!
What's your idea of a hero? Most people think of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Living Flash, Spiderman, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Storm and the list goes on and on. In American culture, these are the best of the best. They fight the bad guys, and win. They "kick ass and take names", as they say in North America. They're the unlimited heroes of comics.
Through communication with aliens, the mangaka in Japan have created a newer kind of hero, a better one. Referring to the early process of creating animation where Looney Toons was the standard cartoon. After that, around the time of Toonami, anime took over in pop culture and the fires of anime are still churning for bad guys to go right into. Though this is just the humble opinion of a random RPG loving otaku. That new hero, that burns baddies slowly is actually, maybe a weaker hero compared to the superheroes of the west, right?
They are the limited heroes. That, or Comic-con doesn't need NYAF to keep their attendance records (or do they?). The limited heroes are the shounen heroes of manga. They come from humble beginnings and are made fun of daily, before they actually become heroes. Even after that, they're always self-conscious about who they're fighting and why...
Short answer: Because they were made fun of.
Long answer: Because they are the limited hero which actually means that they're NOT heroes.
That's summed up best by Monkey D. Luffy: "Heroes have to share the meat..."
And began with Goku, Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, Yusuke Yurameshi. They all don't want to share the meat... Especially Inuyasha (gomenasai) (^^;)
Being that they're not heroes, makes them limited heroes. That's why they don't always have the "great power" that vanquishes all enemies no matter how strong or terrorfying. That's because they're gonna have to fight over dinner, over a hotpot or yakiniku preferably (It's Japan...). They need friends, unlike Superman in his Arctic Fortress of Might where he longs for friends (though that would make anyone very good... or evil).
When they're on their way to the top, they fall down. The stronger ones, get back up only to fall again and again. See they're only as strong as their mangaka (hehe). In explanation, they're always either getting into it with villains or actively seeking villains to make congruent to goodness (kick their butt). We should all know that, especially since most of us are always getting into it. The limited hero is cooler than because they would save you or me, given the choice. And the limited hero would probably get older while doing it, as opposed to being immortal like Superman or Batman.
The question is:
Are you a limited or a unlimited hero?
Are you an Otaku for life?

Don't fall into the trap of being too shounen, be as sad as you are actually during your days. Cry a little or be downcast in the broadcast, even if the days are sunny and warm. There's no turnaround to better days without the blues right there by your side on the bad days.
Mandala Harmony ~
What comes to mind in anime is FMA brotherhood or Clannad's Dango Daikazoku, right? Your own unity circle is between those two in truth. Put personal things in or even put some people in. You won't have good or bad dreams, without one (^^;)

Yokai Spotting: Kasa-Obake
In Japanese folklore, ghosts, light angels, and nether-creatures are called "yokai". Yokai are the spirit forms that inhabit the world of spirits in Shinto religion. Folklore of Japan has countless types of yokai, making it one of the richest cultural examples of creative spirituality on the planet Earth. This differs from Western culture and it's black versus white, good versus bad, and darkness versus light duality which so many people are tired of comparing themselves to.
Anyway, this edition of the blog focuses on different yokai creatures: Yokai-Spotting!
Maybe "Kasa-Obake" (Umbrella Ghost) is a discarded umbrella that fell by a wayside, finding a quiet spot under a bridge where it gained the expanse of time and experiences with animals that it needed to take on a life of its own. That or a grudge that it retained from its previous owner.
Generally, they're not too harmful (as yokai) and Japanese schoolchildren like to doodle them in their notes or creatively.
"Kasa-obake" is one of the Kirby series baddies that made frequent cameos in the older gameboy, SNES, and even the newer installments.
This baddie gives Kirby the ability to wield an umbrella against his foes.

The Otaku Reviewers
This blog, "The Otaku Reviewers", was started in February of 2010 on this very same platform, Blogger. At first, it was a venture into the informational and informal world of comics, anime, video games, and Japanese culture. In other words, just a random blog.
Over time, the founder of the blog credited with the pseudonym "RPGhero" was joined by two fellow bloggers and friends with the names "Chansu" and "Deretsun". Together the three bloggers looked up interesting Japanese culture facts, recommended new anime, talked about their own "otaku" interests, and traveled across the United States to various anime conventions.
There have been off periods when the blog ceased production of content and there have been times when there would be dozens of blog posts per week. The schedule varies depending on the lives of the people behind the alias'. However the pattern is that we always get back into the game with even newer information about Japanese culture, anime, video games, and other nerdy hobbies.
The motto of our blog is:
"A cure for your apathy and an inspiration for your dreams. ...Applies to Otaku, anime fans, J-pop junkies, and the like"
The purpose is to blog about cool stuff related solely to anime and otaku stuff. There's no other reason we're doing this.
