The Anime World of Last Year (2016)

In the anime-otaku world, pocky is a friend just like dogs are a man's best friend. Pets and pocky were made to cheer you up. Just like anime and video games boost pop culture among certain pop lovers.

Like in Pokemon Go, you get a pokemon at first and then go battle for victory. The debut anime had Ash Ketchum as the main character and obsessed with pokemon battling. He seems kind of introverted and shy compared to Pikachu and his friends Misty and Brock. There were other successful platformers that came with an anime such as Kirby and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). The TMNT show was even more popular than the "Nintendo (r)" game. The turtle heroes were humanoid hero turtles but they battled bad guys and didn't back down from their challenges and hundreds of foes. As much as Ash Ketchum might have had second guesses about his Pokemon training abilities and his Pokemon, he was not much inspiration to my child self... He was always debating in a way to himself about why he couldn't take all of the Pokemon he caught with him on all of his journeys, which would be impossible for someone who second guesses himself. In a way, he's not exactly a friend you could trust that much, what do you think? Actually he may be excellently trustworthy because he sees trust in Pokemon, they are his friends.

"Tiger and Bunny" - When you saw the title you knew there would be an accidental tiger attack on a helpless bunny. Actually the anime is about two guys who fight bad guys on reality TV as actual superheroes. Off camera, they control their powers and build social lives with each other and their families. But Bunny has a number of problems and Tiger is losing power... Together they overcome all of their issues with The Man and bad guys to save Sternbild over and over again.

"Chi's Sweet Home" - There are slow episodes (though they are only five minutes long) about a stray kitten that is lucky to find a home in the 'burbs of a Japanese city. If you and I keep watching the episodes, Chi starts to love her new home.

"Gintama" - Samurai and aliens are among Edo's post Meiji crowds, where Gin-san runs Yorozuya Gin-san with Kagura and Shinpachi! Don't forget there's Sadoharu a kind of dog (is he a Samurai or not?) that Kagura adopted and likes. ...And there might be some interesting perspectives on the growing stray cat population.

"Yu-Gi-Oh" - That's deja-vu for the popular card game, c.a. the Pokemon fad that we love. Yugi and his friends (!!!) are on a quest and they want the strongest (monsters?) to defeat Yugi's nemesis at Yu-Gi-Oh battle! Some of the card monsters, dragons and knights, are so strong that the battle is almost over when they're called out!

"Natsume Yuujinchu" - The book of friends contains the names and bonds of kinship to untold "youkai" who were befriended by Natsume's grandma. He wants to begin his grandma's second legacy of giving freedom or friendship back to them. Along the way he gains companions who are interested in the book of friends and in Natsume.

"Tegami Bachi" - There are letters to deliver and the terrain is hazardous due to large metallic insects. There is a message of a kid named Lag Seeing who delivered to a new family by his Tegami Bachi, Gauche Suede or Noir. Later, Lag Seeing becomes a "letter bee" or "tegami bachi" that delivers the last messages of the people of that place to distant far out-of-the-way remote locations there, along with partner 'Niche' who is his partner. Without an eagle, without a bloodhound, or panther, Lag the tegami bachi needs to deliver every one of those backed letters of messages to become the "Head Bee" the leader of the "Tegami Bachi" HQ. Don't you ever wonder if Lag ever sees a bit of himself in every letter?

"Inuyasha" - Is he a dog, or a human, or a super demon dog? Inuyasha is the type of guy who could obey the "phrase", "down boy" by his girlfriend Kagura. His dad is somehow missing, that and the exorcist priestess Keikiyo is after him. Kagura likes Inuyasha's world and Naraku wants to wreak havoc on Kagura's human world. Can Inuyasha, Kagura and friends stop Naraku before he takes of the human world! Will Naraku ever actually take over the human world that way? Before you answer these questions, remember that Inuyasha was the most successful program on Adult Swim and that it's already pretty awesome!

Birdy the Mighty: It's Obviously A Woman's World

Shounen Alert!

So far, Birdy the Mighty is the only action/adventure shounen anime that stars, a female lead. That means a female lead with power in spades and superhero-like strength. Let's recap, this might be the only shounen anime with a STRONG female lead. Strong enough to break your face! hahahaha

Why aren't there more shounen anime out there with female leads, like this one? All of the others are cult interests, like vampires or Halloween towns. Do all girls like vampires and Halloween? That's not the way... Or one day everyone will wake up and the female species... will be gone, presumably to Hogwarts or something. Or they'll be the new villains ..._(O.O)_... Aaaaaah NOooo!

But why not regular heriones???

As anime nerds, we already know that some girls are just regular shounen heroines. But there aren't enough themes and main characters to help a girl out. There should be a long list of shounen, not even "shounen", of action/adventure anime starring girls. Stereotypically, the word shounen refers to boys anime, kind of like the superhero cartoons of Japan. But, then why did you guys in Japan make this one? Just to fly in the face of your own conventions? Make more... Please?

Anime like Birdy the Mighty, show anime fans that it is possible. "Birdy" or her Earth codename, came to Earth from a distant planet to investigate powerful alien criminals that go to Earth to do bad stuff. As events unfold, a human boy gets in the way of a fight. The bad guy uses the boy as a body shield (bravery at its finest or is it typical cowardly bad guy behavior) and Birdy disintegrates him with a full body punch. So... the boy has to be revived on her planet and in the meantime Birdy has to share her body with him... As in, let him use it so he can keep going to school, have a social life, and get good grades. But she still fights aliens when he gets home from school.

Birdy is a typical shounen main character with all the shounen features. She's stubborn, optimistic, brave, impervious to evil, and loves a good challenge. She stands up for what's right in the face of danger and stronger enemies. Plus she can also think with such a hard head...

In fact, if she doesn't wear her superhero suit, she might be a tomboy. If I were a girl, she would be one of my favorite shounen/shoujo heroes and I would lament the anime industry for taking so long to get onto the bandwagon.
In short, they need to make more strong female leads for anime. For otaku. For you and for me. For the world. For the FREAKING UNIVERSE!

You can catch Birdy the Mighty for free, streaming on Hulu.com

Modeling is her side job!
I always knew there were Otaku like me out there...

Happy Belated Cat Day! Nyan Nyan Day!

On February 22nd, Japan celebrated it's 27th annual cat day. Japan is a country that has the highest rates of people owning cats, in the world. It's no surprise that they have a national day of cat adoration. Accurately quoted as "Nyan Nyan Nyan Day" as nyan is the Japanese onomatopea for the cat's meow and it's been going since 1987.

In anime there are more cat references and homages than you could even count. Think about the black cat in trigun, or the talking cat in fairy tail, or the numerous cats in Miyazaki films. There are so many that still have not been mentioned. The cats are just that awesome!

The news tabloids have stated that this video is why the sound for meow is nyan in Japan. I wonder if that is actually correct. This is just a nico nico meme, kind of like saying some American youtube meme is the reason we do something... Anyway just watch.

Deretsun loves this video! LOL

The mysterious black cat that always pops up in Trigun

Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro"

An anime dedicated to the story of Chi, an average cat, "Chi's Sweet Home"

Miyazaki's "The Cat Returns", stars a humanoid cat who guides a young girl on an adventure

I'm not sure which Miyazaki film this is lol.

Fairy Tail sports a talking cat named Happy!

Happy Belated Cat Day!!!

The East vs. West Difference: Boy Bands

Take Off by 2PM

VS.

Bye Bye Bye by Backstreet Boys

What do you think is the difference between the themes of these videos?

As we all know Japanese and most Asian music videos for that matter don't have opposite sex characters in their music videos. American bands always try to have opposite sex characters, especially if the song deals with romance. That's because American bands want to emphasize an overt romantic connection between the song lyrics and romance. In other words, showing romantic scenes.

Asian boy bands and girl bands emphasize a different theme in their videos. Rather than showing romantic scenes, Asian bands are more about emphasizing the "burning youth" of the band members. This connects the song lyrics, even if they're about romance, to being young and having youth.

Neither style is wrong. Though in America there is a connotation that romance and love shows that a person is "grown up" and that youth is over. Being in love, in Japan, at least is connotated with burning youth and the feeling of youth. You can be young at heart, and in love. This is another reason why aging J-rock and J-pop stars still look young. They have to. (lol)

Crunchyroll Aids Japan!

Crunchyroll.com is a great website to watch anime on. I, RPGHero, am a paying anime member of Crunchy. But anyone can watch anime for free on it, just that there's commercials.

After the recent earthquake in Japan, crunchyroll set up a fund and promised to match funds up to 5,000 dollars. Well including myself and all the members of crunchyroll we raised roughly $40,000 including Crunchy's match. I am proud of myself and the crunchyroll community for coming to the aid of Japan and raising so much money!

Blood Type Personality

Brought to you by Issendai's Lair!

Japanese Blood Types and Personality - Issendai's Lair

Japanese Blood Types and Personality

Every Japanese celebrity writeup and every anime character description
with any claim to authority gives the person's (or character's)
blood type. Why? Because, thanks to a remarkable bit of Science!
by a gentleman named Furukawa Takeji, the Japanese believe that
a person's blood type affects their personality.
Each blood type has a personality profile. These profiles—which
I took from a site whose location is long since lost in the mists
of time, my apologies—are:
Type A
People with blood type A have a deep-rooted strength that helps
them stay calm in a crisis when everyone else is panicking. However,
they tend to avoid confrontation, and feel very uncomfortable
around people. A types are shy and sometimes withdrawn. They seek
harmony and are very polite, but all the same feel that they never
really fit in with others. A types are very responsible. If there
is a job to be done, they prefer to take care of it themselves.
These people crave success and are perfectionists. They are also
very creative, and the most artistic of all the blood types, most
likely because of their sensitivity.
People with blood type A are also likely to be considered classic
"type A's": stressed and conscientious. In anime, people
like Hotohori are type A's.
The Third Hokage, Haruno Sakura, Hotohori, Heero Yui, Keiko
(Kayko) Yukimura

Type B
People with blood type B are the most practical of the blood
groups. They are specialists in what they do. When they start
a project, they spend extra time understanding and trying to follow
directions than others might. When they are doing something, all
of their attention is focused on it. They tend to stick to a goal
and follow it through to the end, even if it seems impossible.
They tend to be less than cooperative, as they like to follow
their own rules and their own ideas. They are individualists.
B type people pay attention to their thoughts a little more than
their feelings, and therefore can sometimes seem cold and serious.
People with blood type B are often considered more relaxed, freewheeling,
and unconventional than other types, although not necessarily to
an unacceptable degree. In anime, the genki, off-the-wall types
are type B, along with any kind of well-intended character who's
ruled by their impulses.
Naruto, Duo Maxwell, Miaka, Nuriko, Tasuki, Sagara Sanosuke
Type O
People with blood type O people are outgoing, energetic and social.
They are the most flexible of the blood types. They easily start
up projects but often have trouble following through because they
give up easily. They are flighty and not too dependable. O types
always say what's on their mind. They value the opinion of others
and like to be the center of attention. Also, people with O blood
are extremely self-confident.
Type O, the most "average" blood type, is considered
the best type in Japan.
Quatre, Sailor Moon, Saito Hajime, Kamiya Kaoru, Tamahome
Type AB
People with blood type AB are hard to categorize. They can have
characteristics on both ends of the spectrum at the same time.
For instance, they are both shy and outgoing. They easily switch
from one opposite to another. AB people are trustworthy and responsible,
but can't handle it when too much is asked of them. They don't
mind doing favors or helping out, as long as its on their own
conditions. People with this blood type are interested in art
and metaphysics.
AB is considered the worst blood type. In predictability-loving
Japan, they're loose cannons. They also like to set their own conditions
and reserve the right to drop out when things don't meet their expectations.
They're known to be sensitive and considerate—at times—but
it just isn't enough to balance out the flaws in this blood type.
For a while, some companies tried dividing their employees into
work groups based on blood type, and no one wanted to work with
the AB group. Anime villains are likely to be type AB.

Uchiha Sasuke, Hongo Yui, Tomo, Trowa Barton, Kenshin
A is most compatible with A and AB.
B is most compatible with B and AB.
AB is most compatible with AB, B, A, and O.
O is most compatible with O and AB.

The idea that blood type determines personality has been dying
out slowly in Japan. At the same time, the West has finally noticed
the potential of blood typing. We haven't quite cottoned onto the
idea that blood type is related to personality, but there's a growing
belief in fad diets that teach that each blood type evolved at a
certain point in human history, so people with that blood type should
eat the diet most common among humans at that point. Instead of
balanced, nicely average O's, we have savage cavemen hunching around
the fire and tearing at hunks of meat; solid-citizen type A's become
"docile vegetarians" as well; bouncy type B's get to indulge
in ice cream and cheese; and type AB's, as always, are half one
thing and half another, and get to eat vegan food or dairy-and-everything-else—IF it suits them. Blood type diets are worth looking into if only to imagine your favorite characters' reactions to their new diets.

Sailor Moon, cavewoman. That image puts me in a happy place.

Welcome to
The Otaku Reviewers

This blog, "The Otaku Reviewers", was started in February of 2010 on this very same platform, Blogger. At first, it was a venture into the informational and informal world of comics, anime, video games, and Japanese culture. In other words, just a random blog.

Over time, the founder of the blog credited with the pseudonym "RPGhero" was joined by two fellow bloggers and friends with the names "Chansu" and "Deretsun". Together the three bloggers looked up interesting Japanese culture facts, recommended new anime, talked about their own "otaku" interests, and traveled across the United States to various anime conventions.

There have been off periods when the blog ceased production of content and there have been times when there would be dozens of blog posts per week. The schedule varies depending on the lives of the people behind the alias'. However the pattern is that we always get back into the game with even newer information about Japanese culture, anime, video games, and other nerdy hobbies.

The motto of our blog is:
"A cure for your apathy and an inspiration for your dreams. ...Applies to Otaku, anime fans, J-pop junkies, and the like"

The purpose is to blog about cool stuff related solely to anime and otaku stuff. There's no other reason we're doing this.

If you like our blog, please support us in however small a way that you would like. We appreciate our readers!

Check it out on Amazon!
