In Japan part of the culture there is to do group dating or Gokon.
Where a group of male friends will go out with a group of female friends. Each group will sit across the table from one another. Usually they will talk amongst themselves about who they find attractive and then mingle afterwards. Unlike going to the club, the environment is set up so that you can easily get to know someone and usually is for the beginning of a long-term relationship.
They should do this in America too! The closest American equivalent is speed dating, which is also satirized in the media and television.

They are doing this in America and Europe too! I've found a couple of websites who use a similar concept. I found it really cool.
